TK Maxx definitely won’t max out your credit card

What do you do when it is not sale season and you feel the need to shop, but without spending loads on a new outfit? Discount clothing stores such as TK Maxx are always a good bet to grab a fashion bargain, whatever time of year it is.

The TK Maxx discount store in particular is a favourite for fashion and price-savvy shoppers thanks to it offering big, designer labels and one-off items at up to 60 per cent discount. So, new season designer staples such as a Michael Kors studded jumper, normally priced from £145, cost you more like £87 while classic pieces – nay essentials – like Dolce & Gabbana’s Pony Skin Tote Bag, costing upwards of £1,000 brand new, can be snapped up from as little as £600, saving over £400.

Dispatches – The Secret of the Discount Stores – are they too good to be true?

Tonight I watched the Channel 4 programme on discount stores called The Secrets of the Discount stores, and it was interesting viewing.

Here’s my recap for those of you who may have missed it. Just to warn you, it did feel like a TK Maxx bashing exercise. As you may know, I am very fond of that store and will still be going there!

According to the programme, with the average Brit earning less than £450 a week and the recession biting, stores like TK Maxx are growing, with slogans such as Big Labels This Season, Always up to 60% less and this season’s trend.

A typical TK MAxx store holds 50,000 items and the presenter, Harry Wallop, showed items like a Jean Paul Gaultier mac for £350 down from £2,680. He examined how TK …

Love skiing but don’t want to splash out – cut the cost of skiing

Now why is a post about skiing on a bargain blog you may think? Well if you read my About page, I do say that I am not about frugal living and all the pennies I save on a daily basis go towards treats…and one of these is skiing.

Now skiing is not a cheap holiday, but we and friends of ours do it as cheaply as possible and have learnt some tricks, so if you want to hit the slopes without breaking the bank, here are some ideas.

    Hit the artificial slopes

Even before going out on a ski holiday, get on the artificial slopes in the UK. The lessons are nowhere near as expensive as on the real mountain, but give you a little confidence before you go and that can save …

    Refurbishment on a budget

Here are just some of the bargains that I have picked up for the refurb I mentioned a while back.

The front door is tiny, so the only way to get sofas in is through a window or build them in the house. We took the second option so turned to second hand Nabru sofas. Nabru is a cool brand of sofas that can fit into any space. The sofas new would have cost me close to £700 and we even managed to pick the green one up in our car! You can pick up sofas much, much cheaper especially on Facebook, but size and getting into the space is a problem for me. These sofas can be disassembled easily, you can reassemble them super quickly and you can buy new covers for them from …

Another online designer outlet – Fashionista Outlet

After my post about SecretSales and my penchant for TKMaxx, I started to look around a bit more to see if I could find other designer outlets online. I found Fashionista Outlet and here’s what you need to know about the retailer.

    1. What is Fashionista Outlet?

www.fashionista-outlet.com is an online retailer of discounted designer fashion. The designer outlet offers luxury clothing at competitive prices. Clothing, shoes, bags and accessories are all on offer here, making it a one-stop-shop for discounted designer fashion.

    2. How does the site stand out from competitors?

Fashionista Outlet offers permanent discounts on designer fashion as opposed to the flash sales offered by subscriber-based outlets like SecretSales.  And unlike other online designer outlets such as The Outnet, Fashionista Outlet caters to both men and women.  The company sells worldwide, meaning …

Riding gear at Aldi – special buy

Now I must admit that I do buy Aldi’s ski gear, so was interested to see that they have a new equestrian range for 2014.

I am sad that Aldi do a “once it’s gone it’s gone” policy, but I also like the excitement of thinking what treasure will I find in store this week. Rather like when Tchibo had stores in the UK, I loved those guys too.

Unfortunately, I know that you may read this post after July 2014, the range is in shops from 24 July, so where possible I have listed other places to buy great value riding gear online in case you miss the great deal at Aldi.

I must admit while looking around, I can see that Aldi offers seriously good value and it was too hard to find …

    Great priced holiday essentials

The holiday’s booked and it’s time to get thinking about what to take. Unless you’re off to the deepest darkest jungle, you can pick up most things abroad, but there’s always a bit of a price hike around holiday hotspots, and you can’t always guarantee you get what you want.

So here’s some ideas for holiday essentials check list that are reasonably priced, and I’ve tried to keep the items to under £10 each.

    Ginvera Green Tea Travel kit

This pack is so cute. I was sent samples of the gel and BB cream and I’m now officially a fan. Ginvera has been a best-selling brand in Singapore for many years, but these products are new to the UK. The travel kit includes:
    • 2 x 10g Ginvera Exfoliating Marvel Gel – will freshen up your

Specially for you – personalised gift retailers with reasonable prices

Making someone feel special is easier with a personalised gift, as it shows you put some time and effort into getting that something special.

I met up with my cousin for a coffee and her daughter is turning 8 next month. She wanted to give her something to remind her of this momentous occasion…so we started looking around for personalised gifts and this is what we found.

    Personalised Gift Ideas

Now this retailer really has a fantastic range and everything is personalised, from hip flasks, shot glasses to jewelry and teddy bears. I love, love, love the personalised pillow cases and have ordered the gamer one for my son.

At £9.99 with free delivery, I think it will make a really sweet surprise and something to make him laugh every day. And my cousin is …

    My visit to HomeSense

Today I thought I’d check out HomeSense, a store that recently opened up here, but is part of a national chain.

Now HomeSense is part of the TJX family, which also owns TKMaxx, and there are definitely similarities.

I would say that if you want quirky, cool stuff for your home, this place fits the bill. I loved the selection of clocks above.

There are some well-known brands there. I saw Christy, Monsoon, Dartington, Royal Worcester and Sabatier.

I also saw some unknown to me brands from the US and Switzerland. After the programme, The Secret of the Discount Stores, I am a bit sceptical about brands at TJX stores, so my eagle eyes are open a little wider when I enter their stores.

There wasn’t as much furniture as I expected but a …
