Online tool reveals the cost of Christmas Day through the decades

Some fun to start the festive season here. Last year Hillarys (the blinds people) launched a microsite tool that shows how the cost of Christmas has changed over the years, from as far back as 1968, and the site has now been updated to take into account 2017 prices.

It looks at how much Christmas dinner costs, the best-selling toy of the year, Christmas tree costs and even how much an orange and a piece of coal would have cost you.

The team at home interiors specialist, Hillarys (www.hillarys.co.uk), created the online tool in the lead up to the festive season. Cost of Christmas Past [www.hillarys.co.uk/static/the-cost-of-christmas-past/] allows users to select any year going back to 1968 in order to see just how much Christmas would have cost then.

    Cost of Christmas …

How to make money from your car

So I am a big fan of the shared economy, where you can make money from renting out things you own, think JustPark or AirBNB.

Now can that be done with a car? I asked Richard Laughton CEO of easyCar Club to share some ideas on how to make money from your car.

Most of us own or need access to a car, but is your car working hard enough for you? A huge 96% percent of the time cars are sitting unused, providing great potential to make some extra cash when you’re not driving it. A car can be considered a ‘hidden asset’, capable of bringing in revenue in a number of ways. Here are five ways that could help you earn some extra cash.

    Using your car for ads:

How to spring clean your credit rating

Easily available credit, along with ever-so-tempting internet shopping has meant that consumers often have several credit cards or loans. If you aren’t careful this can lead to credit card debt and black marks on your credit rating, but don’t panic just yet, there are ways to give your finances a spring clean this year. The experts at comparison site MoneyGuru.com have some wisdom to share on how.

A good starting point is getting to know your current financial situation by knowing exactly what your credit rating is, how you can check it and how it affects your finances.

Back to basics – credit rating? What’s that?

A credit rating is used by lenders to decide whether or not your application for credit is successful – whether it’s for a personal loan, credit card, mortgage or …

Pet health advice line launches reducing number of trips to the vet

A brand new pet health advice service, PetGP (www.pet-gp.co.uk) has launched and wants to save owners across the UK £100s from unnecessary trips to the vet. By avoiding these visits, PetGP claims to save owners time and money and their pet from a potentially stressful experience.

A quick and cost effective way to access expert advice immediately, the helpline will be open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and will be answered by qualified vet nurses.

PetGP is the brainchild of Vetsdirect Ltd, the UK’s largest and most trusted helpline for insured pet owners and charities.

PetGP is not designed to replace the vet, who is an essential part of maintaining a pet’s health. Instead, PetGP was set up for two key reasons: to give pet owners peace of mind and …

Free matched betting software – Team Profit

I have now made £2,700 from matched betting, all tax free since the end of April. I pay Profit Accumulator for their annual subscription, which is around £120, but just found out about a free matched betting software and here’s a short question and answer session on them.

    What is Team Profit?

Team Profit is a free to use educational site run by me (Jon) and my friend Sarah. It is aimed at people in the UK looking to make extra money in their spare time.

We teach you how to make £600 risk free from your laptop or mobile, using a betting technique known as ‘matched betting’. To do this, we provide you with tutorial video, step by step guides and live help, all available for free on the website, www.teamprofit.com.

How to entertain children at your wedding on a tight budget

We all know weddings are a pricey affair, and hiring expensive entertainers or sitters are not viable options when you’re on a tight budget. Here are 5 of my favourite ways that brides and grooms can have children at their special day without it costing the world.

    1. DIY these simple games

Don’t buy games, make them! Here are some handy instructions and a free PDF template for Fill in the Blank. These free printable games like word searches, I Spy, and colouring are amazing for keeping the little ones quiet during the reception. Simply print, provide crayons and they’ll be entertained for hours.

Inheritance tax in the UK explained

If a beloved family member has recently passed away and you’re currently in the process of handling his/her inheritance, you’ll most likely be trying to get your head around the potentially thorny issue of inheritance tax (IHT), which is payable if the person’s estate is valued at an amount greater than the appropriate nil rate band allowance.

Birmingham-based legal experts I Will Solicitors have produced this highly educational and easy-to- understand infographic to explain all about the topic of inheritance tax. It outlines when you’d have to pay IHT, when you don’t, when payment is due,and what you need to know about the death of a married person.

There’s also a comprehensive explanation of how the government’s decision in 2015 to increase the nil band rate to £1 million for married couples (and £500,000 for …

Is this the lowest cost Virtual Assistant service available?

I have household and work do lists that are longer than all the arms put together in my house, so I need some help.

We both work full time, and I can’t afford a housekeeper or PA, but I got this email at work from a firm called Jobbajob…”your 24/7 virtual assistant”.

I get a lot of these emails, but I liked the pricing and the fact that if you take a plan out a monthly plan, they will do unlimited 15 minute jobs for you, and some longer “Toughie” jobs!

They will do tasks like research holidays, make simple calls for you, research, order food for you, nag you ;-), and remind you about things.

They divide tasks into Quickies (up to 15 mins) and Toughies (up to an hour). Their cheapest plan is …
