Asda just got cheaper
Asda has announced cutting the price of 1,600 products below all rivals’ prices today. The supermarket is the third biggest in the UK after Tesco and Sainsbury’s, and suffered some abyssmal sales over Christmas time, so that’s the reason dear reader. sThe slide in sales was announced along the price cuts as Asda tries to win over shoppers from competitors, further fuelling the raging supermarket price war.
And good news for us, Asda said that today’s cuts are just the first of lots of price reductions worth £500million, including essentials like fruit and veg, cereal, milk, meat, eggs, fish, nappies and toilet rolls.
As well as fighting against the big boys the cuts will help it to compete with discounters Aldi and Lidl. The price cuts are called “Pocket More”. As a fan of Aldi, …

Is George Osbourne crazy – tax on periods still here
Tampon tax is in the spotlight with Chancellor George Osborne promising to give the VAT the Treasury receives to good causes and to lobby the EU to zero rate all sanitary protection.
Currently VAT is charged at 5% on sanitary items, the lowest rate allowable under EU law. Although, 300,000 people signed a petition against the tax, the Chancellor can’t do anything to change this cos of the EU.
While women’s charities benefit, I still question why are women having to still pay the so called ‘luxury tax’ on an essential item?
In steps Superdrug! From 10th February all purchases of Superdrug’s Own Brand tampons and sanitary towels in the UK will see the customer rewarded with between three and ten loyalty card points added to their Health & Beauty Card account. Each of these …

easyFoodstore takes on Aldi, Poundland and Lidl – everything 25p intro offer
There’s a new discount store on the block. Founded by Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the brains behind easyJet, it will offer basic items, such as sugar, tea and sardines at ‘rock-bottom prices’.
As a fan of Poundland and Aldi, I am intrigued by the 25p grocer easyFoodstore. Launched in London only at the mo, the shelves are stacked with dried pasta, rice and tins.
The shops offers a range of basic items at ‘rock-bottom prices’, with an introductory promotion this month of just 25p for everything – including sugar, tea, sardines, tomato ketchup, peach slices and Jaffa Cakes.
There are no branded products and the store says that it offers ‘No expensive brands, just food honestly priced’. The 25p shop is part of a promotional month, but after that bosses say they could rise to around 50p!… -

Budget at Budgens for Christmas
There are less than five weeks to Christmas and I am looking around for shopping ideas. Budgens isn’t somewhere I would normally consider, as I don’t have one near me, but recently I had the chance to take a wander around.
Budgens are smallish local stores and have both their own ranges and also stock well known brands, at pretty decent prices. There are more than 150 Budgens stores across the UK ranging from petrol forecourts to neighbourhood supermarkets, independently owned by Budgens retailers. Budgens retailers “care about the quality, provenance and value of their food, and their communities’ needs”. Budgens was recently named the ‘best top-up shop’ at the CTP awards, voted for by 20,000 UK shoppers.
Here are the items that caught my eye:
Monty Bojangles Truffles
Their Bojangles chocolates are lovely at …

What you need to know about Sparks – M&S new loyalty card
I was overjoyed to get my Sparks card through the post last week, and then saw that anyone can pick one up, so I feel that as a loyal Marks and Spencers customer, I should share what I know:
What is Sparks?
Sparks is M&S new members club. It’s free to join here: marksandspencer.com/sparks or pick up a card and form in store.
What do I get with Sparks?
The membership scheme rewards food and clothing customers with exclusive benefits, events and personalised offers. For instance, I have got some money off vouchers for clothes, homeware and food at the moment, and for the first 12 days I get 10% off food – I could have chosen clothes, but I spend more on food there! When you register, you need to give hobbies and interests …

Iceland goes up market with posh nosh
Today I had something of a revelation – in Iceland! I had been given a tip off that the frozen food store had some exciting new products in…at a very reasonable price.
Last time I’d been in was when the new Slimming World range was in store. I now see that they have added more new dishes, so I guess that they are successful.
Anyway, I wandered around the store and saw the usuals, pizza, fish fingers and chips…but it looks like Iceland is getting adventurous….what with rabbit and kangaroo meat available….and lobster.
You can buy a whole Canadian lobster for the grand price of £4.99. Yes that is correct. Now the crustacean will definitely impress, but I recommend that you practice on one before serving it up on a dinner date, as we could …

Online bulk buying supermarket launches – BuyMucho
BuyMucho.com is launching on 19th October – it’s a new bulk buy club, offering over 1,300 branded grocery items, ordered online and delivered to your door. Sort of like Costco on speed, so it’s open to everyone, no restrictions as to member’s background and home delivery. All you have to do is go to the website and register… it’s really as easy as that! Users will then be chosen from the pool of people registered and then have access to all their favourite brands.
As the service has just launched the registered users will be limited to a geographic location to begin with (the South – East first). Eventually, all users will be able to purchase, as locations will go live in batches. The more people that sign up in a certain area the quicker …
