Code – 10% off holiday rental in Bonnie Scotland

With the Scottish referendum bringing Scotland to the top of everyone’s minds, I started to wonder how easy it would be to travel across the border if the vote had been yes. Thankfully, it was no so I won’t be having my passport checked or whatever border controls would be put in place.

To recognise the fact that many of us will go to neighbouring countries for our holidays and Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries I know, I’ve teamed up with HouseTrip, one of the world’s largest holiday home rental websites, to offer you a 10% discount on all HouseTrip holidays within Scotland, with the following discount code: LX4APC7X7PT8

This is valid until 23:59:59 UK time on 28 September 2014, please see below for T’s & Cs.

Lift sharing for busy parents – Kiddidrop.com

Next week we’re back to school, and one new service that attracted my attention was a lift sharing service for kids – www.kiddidrop.com. Now I know parents who stick their kids on the school bus as it’s cheaper than childcare. I myself have been asked to take four other children to school and it’s a pain, so having a lift share where everyone benefits is a great idea. Here’s some more information.

    What is Kiddidrop.com?

Kiddidrop.com is an introductory service that matches registered parents from the same area who are looking to share the school drop off and pick up, helping ease the school run for both them and their child.

What are the benefits of sharing the school run?

Kiddidrop.com will inevitably help save time, money, traffic congestion and the environment, whist also improving …

    Great priced holiday essentials

The holiday’s booked and it’s time to get thinking about what to take. Unless you’re off to the deepest darkest jungle, you can pick up most things abroad, but there’s always a bit of a price hike around holiday hotspots, and you can’t always guarantee you get what you want.

So here’s some ideas for holiday essentials check list that are reasonably priced, and I’ve tried to keep the items to under £10 each.

    Ginvera Green Tea Travel kit

This pack is so cute. I was sent samples of the gel and BB cream and I’m now officially a fan. Ginvera has been a best-selling brand in Singapore for many years, but these products are new to the UK. The travel kit includes:

Tips on saving money on holidays

I am all for saving money on holidays, so was interested to see travel company Expedia.co.uk says it is developing new tools to help take the stress out of travel planning.

They released some research today and I have taken their information on where Brits are failing to save on their holidays and some top tips to save money on your holiday.

Apparently, last year those who booked flight and hotel together with Expedia.co.uk saved over £200 on average, so I guess they know a thing or two about saving money.

Where Brits fail to save money on holidays

    1. Just two fifths (40%) of Brits search for seasonal sales prior to booking a holiday.
    2. A mere 6% take advantage of discounts by booking through mobile and just 11% subscribe for newsletter exclusive deals.
    3. Only 22%

3 great tips to save money on school holiday flights

Last night’s Watch Dog revealed three awesome tips to save money when buying flights for family holidays, and avoiding the price hike that comes with school breaks, so I thought I’d share:

    1. Take advantage of Scotland or England’s different school holiday times

Scottish and English school holidays often differ. For example, in Scotland in the summer most schools break up at the end of June and pupils go back in the third week of August. This means that if you are Scottish, you could make your way down to English airports such as Manchester and Newcastle when English kids are still at school and save in flight costs. The same applies in reverse, English people can travel north for cheaper flights. According to Watch Dog, the savings offset any petrol and parking costs.

    2.

    Grab your free Family Railcard

Today I’ve applied for a free 2-month Family Railcard (and code for £10 off (valid 14 July – 14 August) a year’s card, which is normally £30).

As there seems to be a lot of demand after applying, I got this message: “we will endeavour to get your Railcard (aka Family & Friends Railcard) to you by 31st May 2014.” The card will be valid until 31st July and allows you to save a third on adult fares and 60% on child fares.

So who is eligible and some facts

If you are travelling with a child who is aged 5 -15, get applying! Up to four adults and four kids can travel on one Railcard – and they don’t even need to be related.

I have my name and Mr BH’s as you can …

Love skiing but don’t want to splash out – cut the cost of skiing

Now why is a post about skiing on a bargain blog you may think? Well if you read my About page, I do say that I am not about frugal living and all the pennies I save on a daily basis go towards treats…and one of these is skiing.

Now skiing is not a cheap holiday, but we and friends of ours do it as cheaply as possible and have learnt some tricks, so if you want to hit the slopes without breaking the bank, here are some ideas.

    Hit the artificial slopes

Even before going out on a ski holiday, get on the artificial slopes in the UK. The lessons are nowhere near as expensive as on the real mountain, but give you a little confidence before you go and that can save …

Get away – getting a low cost holiday

I can’t afford a £4,000 holiday, nice as it would be, so I’ve been focusing on getting away for next to nothing this summer.

We won’t be going anywhere exotic; instead, we’re going to Paris.

I wanted to find the cheapest way of travelling there, so I searched online for cheap flights and found that Flybe comes in with flights at just over £400 for four of us from the Midlands. Wow, with entry to EuroDisney and food, I wanted to cut flight costs some more.

I used to collect Airmiles and they are now Avios, so I checked in and low and behold I have over 50,000. Using these points has got me four returns to Paris on the Eurostar. We’re visiting Eurodisney and staying in a 4* hotel, with breakfast, less than 10 …

Cut the cost of rail travel

So I travel by train a lot especially to London. The fares have rocketed over the last few years, with a return going up £17. This increase really irks me.

I’ve found a number of ways to cut the cost of rail travel and keep journey costs down:

    1. Book your ticket in advance – advance can mean as late as 11.59 pm the day before travel. Advance tickets are not as flexible, and if you miss the train you could end up paying for a single fare home but if you know meeting times, this is a great option. Seats become available twelve weeks before travel for the cheapest fares….which is useful if you are doing regular journeys.
    2. Buy two singles – sometimes it can be cheaper than a return, since you may travel one
