    My visit to The Works

Full of discounted books, stationery, art supplies and more, The Works is a veritable treasure trove.

There are 300 stores in the UK and I must admit the first time I visited one, I thought it was going to be full of tonnes of cheap tat. I was actually put off going in as I expected to see plastic buckets and mop heads next to toilet rolls and dusters.

However, I have braved the store since and love it. I have bought small toys for party bag gifts, art pencils, quirky gifts, coloured card, an easel, stocking fillers and card making kits there.

The Works says it is now marketed as Britain’s leading discount store and they have very high stock turnover due to high demand from consumers.

I find that for basic art supplies, …

Is this the cheapest Delivery Saver for £3 a month

Tesco already offers the cheapest online grocery delivery slots at £1 and Click & Collect is free.

Now the largest UK supermarket has made some changes to make their delivery saver even cheaper. They have reduced their midweek Delivery Saver to just £3 a month.

Annoyingly for us, they’ve brought in a minimum order value of £25. You can still order items that total less than £25, but now you have to pay a £4 surcharge.

Tesco has also introduced a new Delivery Saver Guarantee – a promise from the supermarket that you’ll never be out of pocket. Basically, when your plan comes to an end, they’ll work out how much you’ve saved, and if it turns out you’d have spent less without Delivery Saver, they’ll email you a grocery eCoupon for the difference.

    There …

Poundland and Aldi prices in Morrisons and Tesco’s

Our Morrisons is having a major revamp and it’s part of a bigger drive to cut prices for consumers.

I recently asked if Morrisons could really take on Aldi and Lidl in terms of pricing. Well, let’s just say, they’re having a good go at it.

On 1 May, Morrisons pledged to cut the price of 1,200 products by an average of 17pc. I saw evidence of this today in my shop, with a firm favourite Jammie Dodgers down to 49p from over a £1.09. This price matches Aldi’s.

Looks like Morrisons is banking on the price cuts to encourage shoppers to spend more at the shop and less at Aldi and Lidl. Now I would welcome that as I would be able to get everything in one place and prefer Morrisons products sometimes.

    The …

Where to buy cheap designer jeans?

Unless you’re a regular visitor to the US, designer jeans are not cheap, so where do you find the brands without splashing the cash?

I wear jeans pretty much every day and so do most of my friends and family. And when it comes to buying jeans, there are plenty of shops that sell them. If you’re shopping for jeans on a tight budget, you’ve got plenty of options both on the high street and online, from Primark to New Look and other similar stores.

The only problem with cheap jeans is, as with anything, you get what you pay for.

So I turned my quest for a good pair of jeans to the designer aisles – I do not deny myself luxury once in a while, I deserve it. Brands such as Levi’s, G …

    My visit to HomeSense

Today I thought I’d check out HomeSense, a store that recently opened up here, but is part of a national chain.

Now HomeSense is part of the TJX family, which also owns TKMaxx, and there are definitely similarities.

I would say that if you want quirky, cool stuff for your home, this place fits the bill. I loved the selection of clocks above.

There are some well-known brands there. I saw Christy, Monsoon, Dartington, Royal Worcester and Sabatier.

I also saw some unknown to me brands from the US and Switzerland. After the programme, The Secret of the Discount Stores, I am a bit sceptical about brands at TJX stores, so my eagle eyes are open a little wider when I enter their stores.

There wasn’t as much furniture as I expected but a …

Can Morrisons really take on discount rivals Aldi and Lidl?

Good news for us maybe as Morrisons joins the discount wars.

I shop mainly at Aldi and complement it for my favourite branded goods at Co-op and Morrisons, so when Morrisons said today that they will be giving us more discounted products, that made me smile.

Sounds like Morrisons won’t become a discounter itself, but they said that “prices would … be just low enough that their fresh food and quality offers would be worthwhile.”

I already noticed their market street offers with some fruit and veg for 49 p including broccoli and cucumber, and this week saw 3 selected veg for £1.50 or 69p each.

Now if I could get a bigger value range at Morrisons, I wouldn’t bother with Aldi, but currently they don’t compare, and neither do the other supermarkets. You get …

    Online poundshops – Poundshop.com vs Hereforapound.com a comparison

I recently compared online supermarkets, so I thought I would take a look at the new online pound shops. At the beginning of February, there was a media buzz around the new online discount stores. The major contenders were Poundshop.com, Hereforapound.com and Pound Panda. Now Pound Panda seems to have already exited the ring and its site is still down, so I decided to focus on the other two. My summary of pros and cons and my first impressions are below.

I have to admit that with two Pound Land shops within walking distance of my house (I am really lucky ;-)), I am not that tempted to shop online, however, for those that have to drive into town or want to buy a stack of stuff and use public transport, or for those …

Poundshop.com launches for online pound shopping

Poundshop.com is now live, so now even the people who don’t want to be seen shopping in pound shops can enjoy the delights we others have known for years.

With 18 different product categories including health and beauty, partyware, food and drink and medical, lots more people will discover the benefits of pound shopping.

The site, which has a minimum order of £10 and delivery at a flat fee of £3.65, will increase Poundworld’s reach to areas where it does not currently have a retail shops. Poundworld is the high street shop behind Poundshop.com.

Some sample great buys are Arm and Hammer toothpaste, ped egg, pregnancy test, round foil party platter x 3, solar wall light, lawn restore feed, cable ties and a bungee cord – all for a £1 each.

    Deliveries are made Monday …

Best supermarket for online grocery shopping – a comparison

From prices, delivery costs to minimum order value and customer service, which online grocery store wins my comparison?

You may know that I shop at Aldi and supplement that shop with Co-operative or Morrisons, but sometimes I have a lot on and need to save time, so I go online.

I haven’t shopped online since September 2013 for groceries, so I thought I would check out what’s new and have put my research here in my attempt to see which is the best online grocery store on paper. I looked at Asda, Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. I thought about adding Waitrose but they do have a reputation for being expensive, and after five days their customer service hadn’t got back to me about my online grocery queries, so I left them out.

    Here are my …

Online pound shop on its way – Poundshop.com

I read with excitement this news about Poundland’s co-founder Steve Smith announcing his plans to launch the UK’s first online single price retailer. Basically bringing a pound shop online, is another convenient way to bag a bargain.

Poundshop.com will launch in the next 3 to 6 months, with a minimum order value of around £20 with a delivery charge on top (around £3), although the exact amount is yet to be decided. Smith justified the delivery cost as he pointed out that shoppers pay to get into town and parking.

There are rumours that Smith is working with discount retailer Poundworld to bring products from its stores to consumers and wholesalers online.

He told Retail Week magazine that he could keep his cost base low by securing good deals and will pass the savings on …
