How to keep saving on your car insurance
How much you pay for insurance can make a sizeable difference to the overall cost of owning a car, so it’s important not to pay more than you need to. I just renewed my premium, so got to thinking that I needed to share some tips on keeping premiums as low as possible. Of course I went to a comparison website and saved over £200 off the quote last year’s provider gave me for renewal, but there are plenty of other things to consider.
Here are our top tips to avoid over-spending on insurance:
Factor in insurance from the start
It’s easy to be seduced by the upfront price of a new car, but remember that it doesn’t include the cost of insuring it for the road.
The more powerful and more valuable your car, …

Insurance that rewards your careful driving
Our homes are getting smarter, and now our cars too. They can tell your insurance company whether you are a careful driver and then the insurance guys set your premium accordingly.
Sounds good? Here are some more details. DrivePlus is Direct Line’s telematics insurance policy, which offers drivers of all ages an upfront discount when they take a policy out.
DrivePlus gives customers a driving score which is calculated by analysing driving style, including smoothness, braking and contextual speed and where and when you drive. Users can review their overall driving score and their score for each individual journey to see how they have improved over time. The price of the policy is reviewed at the point of renewal and takes driving scores from the prior year into consideration.
Customers have achieved discounts of up …

Annual car breakdown cover for £25
Sick of paying for breakdown cover but never using it? Well the AA may have the answer.
I was looking for new cover for my car, and as the last time I called out a recovery service was 1992, I begrudgingly searched the internet. I believe it’s better to be safe than stuck on the M6 on a rainy night with no cover.
Anyway, the smile came back to my face when I found AA’s Basic Breakdown Cover. It 24/7 roadside assistance for breakdowns over 1/4 mile from home. Covers one vehicle for anyone driving it. And here’s the catch…..it’s limited to one call-out a year. Further call-outs available on a pay-for-use basis. Oh well that is just perfect!
They’ll cover any roadworthy vehicle, such as a car, motorbike, van, caravan or minibus as long …

Halfords’ free 6-point summer car checks
With a third (28%) of families* saying they will take the family car abroad this summer, Halfords is offering peace of mind with its new 6-point summer check.
Available at Halfords stores and Halfords Autocentres, staff will check screenwash and top up for free, and check oil, blades, bulbs and the battery and air-con to keep you cool.
What do they check?
With a Halfords car health check we look at 6 things:
- The battery
- Light bulbs
- Windscreen wipers
- Oil levels
- Screen wash levels
- Air conditioning
Why do they check these areas?
All these areas can be common problems – they affect us all and are crucial to your car’s performance and your safety. It’s important to know that:
- A battery failure is one of the main reasons why people call a breakdown service, so

Save money on a new car – haggling not necessary
Not all of us can afford a brand new car; that’s a fact. Even when 0% finance deals are taken into account, the monthly repayments are often still too high for many of us to afford.
Considering all the great finance deals available, however, there’s never been a better time to consider purchasing a brand new set of wheels. Recent analysis from an online platform that allows users to compare quotes for brand new cars found that, in some cases, cars ina used condition with a few thousand miles on the clock can actually often work out to be more expensive than buying that same model brand new. Why? Purely because of those finance deals I mentioned earlier.
It’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever get 0% finance on a used car, but plenty of manufacturers …

Website and app for finding cheap petrol – PetrolPrices.com
With London and other cities threatening to impose a diesel tax, on top of all the other taxes faced by motorists, finding ways of cutting the costs of motoring have never been more important. And, with another fuel price war kicking off between supermarkets, tracking down the best deals could save drivers a few pretty pennies.
Asda kicked off the price war earlier this week by capping petrol at 124.7 p per litre and 128.7 p per litre on diesel across its 234 forecourts this weekend. Tesco and Sainsbury’s have also jumped aboard the petrol-price-drop wagon lowering their prices.
With the petrol price wars raging, I’ve found www.PetrolPrices.com – a website that helps users to search for the cheapest petrol in their area or across the UK quickly and at no cost, allowing them to …

£700 for renting out an empty parking space
You may know that I use JustPark, formerly ParkatMyHouse, to rent out a space that lies empty on my drive.
I wanted to share with you how easy the service is to use and maybe get you thinking whether you have some space that could be earning you money while sitting empty.
Even if you don’t have a space, what about your elderly friends or relatives who no longer drive and have parking for someone who is willing to pay for it.
Great locations are near stations, tube stops, town centres, airports, stadia and business parks. Parking around these areas isn’t cheap, so using JustPark can earn you money.
On the other side of things, if you are looking for a parking spot and don’t want to pay high NCP car park prices or …
